how to add limit when too many search results

Since attributes are not a mandatory criteria for search, we would like to add a limit to search results for better customer experience. For example, maximum of 26 results otherwise show message like ” There are too many results for this search. Try your search again with more specific criteria ”

How can we achieve that?
