Adding images when Jetpack's Photon is enabled displays the image too small

I have the Photon add on in Jetpack turned on for optimising images.

When I use Content Editor to add a new image the display of the image is only about half of the width of the page even when I only have a single column. When I save the page and edit again the image is full size but this is very confusing for my client.

I have disabled Photon for now and it is working as expected. Is there something I can do to fix this?
